THE PRECISION GARDENER
AccuRain is a sprinkler system that allows
gardeners to customize their watering in
up to 15 different zones in their yards.
The system employs watering heads
about the size of a softball that can water
anywhere in a 60-foot-diameter circle. By
plugging a controller into the watering
head, homeowners can add, change or
delete watering zones. Because
the water is delivered evenly, you won't
need to allow for overlap like you do with
conventional sprinkler systems.

#10 ‘Intelligent’ watering heads
AccuRain's
Robotic Watering System is a revolutionary way for your clients to
irrigate their yards. The robotic watering head is mounted above
the ground and puts out a stream of water from 3 inches to 30 ft.,
full circle. You group the plants that have the same watering
requirements within this 60-ft. circle, and create a zone around
them. You also enter the amount and how often to water.
At
watering time, the robotic head puts out a stream of water that
covers the zone in stripes, and scans from left to right until the
zone has received the correct amount of water. The system can have
from one to 30 robotic heads, and each head can water up to 15
individual zones. Each head only requires a single water pipe,
making installation simple.
The AccuRain watering product:

digging up pipe
|
 | allows zones within zones to match water amounts with
variations in evaporation due to differences in shaded areas and
areas in full sun |

Finally, I look at the Accurain. This football [ed:
about 1/2 the diameter of a soccer ball] like watering device is
trained to water selected areas of your garden with a frequency
ranging from every day to once a fortnight. Unlike all the other
computerised watering systems this one can accurately supply the
correct amount of water to each part. You can easily hide the
watering head as part of your garden furniture - the Accurain
website has some very good examples. It retails at around £160
which compared with hundreds of feet of drip tubing or having to
bribe the neighbours to do it when you are away is very good
value. And if you move house you can easily take it with you!

No.18 – A Thinking Sprinkler.
Most
sprinklers water in a set pattern. The AccuRain sprinkler is
different. With a few button pushes, you can program it to water
up to 15 separate zones of almost any shape within a 30 ft radius.
It can even water individual plants. Within each zone, you tell
the AccuRain how much water to deliver, and how often, from as
frequently as once a day up to once a month. The spherical
sprinkler head mounts virtually anywhere—on a fence post, rail, or
a wall, as well as in the ground—and connects to your water line
with a rigid PVC pipe. 11/2003 International

OK, we couldn't resist. How many lawn sprinklers can
you really consider "extreme," anyway? (And no, that Willy
Waterbug was only extreme when you were six years old.) In short,
you set up one or more robotic AccuRain sprinklers in your yard
with the usual water pipes, plus an electrical connection. Next,
you program them with a portable controller tablet to spray water
only within a series of up to 24 points you define on the lawn.
Rather than indiscriminately deluging an area with water like a
regular sprinkler, an AccuRain robot will raster the defined area
with a single stream of water, up to 30 feet in any direction.
This lets water soak in without wasting it on your deck or
driveway. See? Even your lawn-obsessed, doofus neighbor can go
